“Response Inhibition and Vitality Enhancement via Interactive Virtual Exercise for Seniors”
Age-related declines in executive function lead to challenges in everyday life among older adults, thereby affecting independence, vitality and mental health. Exercise that simultaneously engages cognitive and physical demands improves executive function and promotes healthy ageing.
The randomized controlled trial “REVIVE” examines the effects of an interactive virtual exercise program on cognitive and physical functioning during late adulthood. Healthy adults aged 55 years and above completed two laboratory assessments conducted six weeks apart to evaluate cognitive performance, explosive strength, gait speed, physical and psychological wellbeing. Between the laboratory visits, the control group continued with their daily routines, while the intervention group attended three weekly exergaming sessions over a six-week period. The virtual exercise program adapts to participants’ performance and gradually increases in difficulty over time. This study aims to promote healthy ageing through innovative exergaming.
