(Development of EXecutive functions and muscular sTREngth in youth)

DEXTER investigates the development of muscular strength and executive functions in children and adolescents aged 8-16 years. Executive functions (working memory, inhibition and cognitive flexibility) are higher order cognitive processes and predictors for academic achievement and mental health.

DEXTER is a prospective observational study investigating the development of executive functions and muscular strength over one year. Through three summer camps, participants are assessed twice with child‑friendly computer‑based tasks and a strength test battery measuring isometric, reactive, explosive and endurance strength.

DEXTER aims to identify sensitive developmental periods during which targeted strength and activity promotion can most effectively support healthy cognitive development in youth.
