FAB – Fatigue and Brain: Effects of Cognitive and Physical Fatigue on Neuromuscular and Executive Function: A Bidirectional Investigation

The FAB project is an interdisciplinary study of Romina Ledergerber and Melanie Berger investigating the interaction between cognitive and physical fatigue. Although both commonly co-occur in daily life, sport, and work, they have largely been studied in isolation. Using a controlled cross-over design, the study examines whether mental fatigue affects maximal muscle strength and voluntary activation, and whether neuromuscular fatigue alters cognitive performance. Cognitive fatigue is induced by a parametric Stroop task, complemented by EEG and ECG measures to capture neurophysiological processes. By integrating cognitive neuroscience and muscle physiology methods, the project aims to uncover shared mechanisms and address a critical gap in fatigue research.
