
Effects of Parent-supported and Home-based Motor Skill Training on Cognitive and Motor Functions in Children Born Very Preterm: A Pilot Study Using Patient and Public Involvement
Preterm birth is associated with an increased susceptibility to developmental difficulties that often persist throughout childhood. While motor skill interventions have shown beneficial effects on cognitive functioning in full-term born children, movement programs specifically tailored to the needs of children born preterm are lacking.
“PPI Activities” investigates the feasibility and acceptability of a parent-supported, home-based motor skill training for very preterm children developed using a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) approach. Children aged 8 to 12 years with history of preterm birth participated in a pilot study, consisting of two laboratory visits to assess cognitive and motor functions, as well as a four-week motor skill training. The intervention included three weekly movement challenges targeting fine and gross motor skills and was delivered via an online platform. Both children and parents evaluated the feasibility of the motor skill training. The findings contribute to the development of comprehensive and accessible movement program for children born very preterm.
